US duties, the PD's attack: "Meloni exposes Italy to embarrassing situations that weaken us internationally"
" Calm down and chalk. For the moment there are no concrete decisions, but just another post on Trump's social media . We have seen many of them in recent months, with the American president announcing disasters and then backtracking. We must keep our nerves, not be impressed by Washington's threats and continue to negotiate with great unity and keeping our backs straight". With these words , Senator Antonio Misiani, head of economics for the Democratic Party , questioned by Affaritaliani.it , answers the question of whether, after the announcement of 50% duties against the European Union, because there is no agreement, by the President of the United States Donald Trump, the European Union should continue the dialogue or respond immediately or in any case quickly with counter-duties against the USA.
" The European Union has the specific weight and all the tools to protect our companies and our workers . The US, for its part, will hardly be able to sustain the insane trade war unleashed by Trump for long: they are having an increasingly difficult time selling their government bonds, they are sliding towards recession and they risk an inflationary flare-up that will infuriate their consumers", underlines the Democratic exponent.
"European unity, however, is an essential condition for negotiating. The Meloni government must stop having a foot in two camps . This is not the time for ambiguity and image operations for the benefit of social media. Meloni's illusion of acting as a bridge has been denied for the umpteenth time by Trump and exposes Italy to embarrassing situations that weaken our role at the international level . We must choose. Europe is our home and only together with our European partners will we be able to effectively defend our interests", concludes Misiani.
